Most of you know Mr. Right and I force our children to eat oatmeal for breakfast. Every single day.
No it does not get old. Yes it does.
Why oatmeal?
It's cheap and so am I.
PLUS it has the added benefit of enforcing in our children's minds that we really are mean parents. I feel if we start the day off with that reminder than we're off on the right food...I mean foot.
Occasionally we'll surprise the little bugs and make Cream of Wheat. The kids really love Cream of Wheat. Mostly because it's not oatmeal. Sadly C of W is only sold in really small portions. One box is one meal. They don't even stock enough at the store to make it worth my while.
One time, last September, we were at A.P.'s house and he made us pancakes for breakfast. My kids still talk about that.
So when we have guests over, as we do now, we dragoon them into either starving or gagging down a few bites along with us. Misery does love company. If we really like our guests, as we do now, we give them extra brown sugar. Some of our guests try to innocently sleep through the feast. Our kids make sure they don't. We even have one guest who gets up and leaves the house at 5am to avoid the dilemma. That's very polite of him I'm sure, but I've noticed he still gets home in time to eat the really delicious meal: dinner.
Anyway, despite all that, as you know, we're not healthy people. Remember? We're cheap. That means we do eat cold cereal. We just don't let the kids eat it. How do we justify the expense? First off, it's cheaper for only two people to be eating it than five people. You could have done the math on that one. Secondly, we've engaged a rule that one may only purchase a box of cold cereal if it's two dollars or less.
Mr. Right goes a little crazy with this. It's his license to spend. If there's a sale on, he'll rush through his oatmeal, grab the closest kid (so I feel he's doing me a favor - which, well he is) and head out. Sometimes he won't even do his hair before leaving. He'll just slap on a hat and burn rubber.
I might love Baby Powdered Doughnuts, but he loves his cold cereal (and fresh bread and cheese and pasta, and steak, and chocolate, and ice cream and . . .)
Oh's and just for Kix I thought I'd give you a peak at our pantry to view the insanity. Remember though, for us, it's just Life.
