GROWING UP

This morning I said to myself, I need to make another cake.

It is cold outside and we could do with the smell of warm chocolate.

I also need to make rolls and get the all-day stew cooking.

I need to do my hair.

I need to sweep the floor.

I am busy, busy, busy this morning.

Those are the things I thought as The Princess unloaded the dishwasher.

Is it a parental rite of passage to have to nag your children to get your chores done in a timely matter?

Sorry Love and Logic, the consequence for a chronically distracted six year old who takes 48 minutes to unload the dishwasher, is a naggy mama.

"Can you stop dancing with the butcher knife?"

"Can you not put the clean sieve on your face?"

"Can you quit putting the clean bowls on your head?"

"Can you stop creating designs with the dishes and just put them away?"

Wait a clever-mommy second...what am I doing?

Consider the moaning and gnashing of teeth I faced last week when I was informed how much The Princess did not like doing chores.

Why do you hate chores?

"Can I say the B word?"

Yes.

"Chores are boring."

Well (I told her) growing up means learning how to be responsible even when you think it is boring or hard. Growing up means learning how to feel good about doing chores and work.

Consider that wise advice.

Put a clean bowl on your head while you do something dull like mopping the floor and consider the irony.

Clever-mommy...you really shouldn't nag so.

She's doing what you said.

She is growing up.
